Unexpected snowfall across the higher elevations of Metro Vancouver has led Simon Fraser University (SFU) to cancel morning classes.

The university made the announcment at 8:50, warning commuters to return home due to deteriorating road conditions on Burnaby Mountain.

Anyone already at the Burnaby campus are being asked to remain there until road conditions improve.

SFU's Surrey and Vancouver campuses remain open

The university said it will provide another update at 10 a.m.
