A local financial institution is helping to get youth to talk about mental health and substance abuse issues.

Coast Capital Savings has donated $432,000 to Fraser Health to establish a website and education programs so young people, including those in the Tri-Cities, can talk about mental health concerns and problems associated with substance abuse.

The program called BC Speak Up is unique, according to Fraser Health, because it will engage youth with and without mental health and/or substance use issues through peer support, targeted education in schools and a new online community - [email protected]

The donation by Coast Capital is the largest corporate contribution to youth and young adult mental health programs ever received by Fraser Health, according to a press release.

Designed as a youth for youth initiative, Speak Up will encourage young people to feel more comfortable talking about these issues either in person or online. More information is available at [email protected].
