A Burquitlam homeowner gave Coquitlam city council an earful this week about an application the elected officials have yet to officially see.
On Monday, Willem Schiere of the Farrow Street committee - made up of residents in two highrises near the Como Lake Avenue and Clarke Road intersection - said the proposal by developer Beedie Living for a 26-storey residential tower would create problems in the area.
Schiere said if the building were to go up, it would be 25 m away from his and would crowd the area.
"We are very concerned it's going to impact our privacy," he said, while also warning of the potential loss of light and mature trees.
As well, Schiere complained the strata of The Victoria would lose revenue from a nearby telecommunications site as the Beedie building would block reception.
Houtan Rafii, vice-president of residential development for Beedie Living, said his company has met with The Victoria strata council and other area groups. "As with every project, we endeavour to work with neighbours and stakeholders to address concerns during the conceptual and design process," he said in an email to The Tri-City News on Tuesday.
Beedie, which has submitted its plans to city staff for review, wants to link its proposed 180-unit tower on Como Lake Avenue with the YWCA Como Lake Gardens by providing seven townhouses and amenity space for the single mothers and their kids at the facility. Its development would also include a multi-level parkade as well as a vehicle roundabout close to the Burquitlam Evergreen station.
At the council-in-committee meeting, Schiere and his neighbours were encouraged to speak at the public hearing when council formally considers the application.
