Members of the The Cops for Cancer – Tour de Coast rolled in to Coquitlam Tuesday morning to celebrate successful fundraisers for childhood cancer research.

Each September, following months of arduous training, over 100 committed law enforcement and emergency services personnel spend up to two weeks cycling across the province.

Three members of the Coquitlam detachment — Const. David Bachtel, Const. Pamela Newman and Const. Laura Baker have been training for the ride all year long and have raised thousands of dollars towards childhood cancer research and support programs.

“I ride because no child should have to go through a cancer diagnosis and no parent should have to watch their child suffer,” said Const. Baker.

Const. Newman said she had a personal connection to cancer and wanted to help children and families fight cancer.

“It’s (a cause) that has always been close to my heart,” Newman told the Tri-City News.

As much as $545,000 has been raised by the Cops for Cancer - Tour de Coast, including over $31,000 raised by the Coquitlam detachment through a jail and bail event.
