A Coquitlam BMX star who was competing in his first Olympic games lost out on his chance for a medal Thursday.

Tory Nyhaug of the Redline BMX club won the fifth and final run of his Heat 2 group but missed out on the semifinal round by a single point.

Nyhaug, who ruptured his spleen in May while racing in the Netherlands, said in a press release after the accident: "This has been the hardest and most painful month of my life, and I can only see a brighter future ahead. BMX is a dangerous sport and we all know the risks going in.

"I know after going through something like this, I can face serious challenges head on."I can't wait to represent Canada, both in London and for years to come."
