Coquitlam fire crews turn Foyer Maillard into training exercise

Coquitlam firefighters took part in a training exercise last Thursday that they said will help bolster the department's ability to fight blazes in high-rise structures.

The seven-storey Foyer Maillard, which is scheduled for demolition later this year, was used to give each of the 16 companies a better understanding of what is involved in battling blazes in taller buildings.

"Similar scenarios are regularly practiced in tabletop exercises," said deputy fire chief Greg Mayberry in a press release. "But conducting an exercise in an actual building is a rare opportunity for firefighters to experience the real physical challenge of a fire response."

With so many high-rises going up in the municipality different firefighting techniques are being emphasized, including the use of elevators. In newer buildings with more progressive elevator technology, it is possible for crews to use the lift to get important equipment and people to the source of the fire.

The training session also gave firefighters the opportunity to experience the physical challenge of a fire response, such as the noise of fire alarms, use of radios and P.A. systems, deploying hoses and building security.
