A drunk driver faces several charges after allegedly assaulting Port Moody police officers Thursday night.

A suspected drunk driver pulled over for a traffic stop is facing more serious charges after he tried to grab the weapon of a Port Moody police officer (PMPD).

According to PMPD spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias, the motorist was pulled over in the 2600 block of St. Johns Street at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday night, Feb. 8.

After providing a breath sample that exceeded the legal limit into a roadside screening device, the 35-year-old Coquitlam man was issued an immediate 90-day driving prohibition.

Zacharias said the man then became hostile and he was arrested for public intoxication.

As he was being arrested though, the motorist allegedly assaulted officers, resisted arrest and attempted to grab the gun of one officer.

Zacharias said the man was brought under control and handcuffed. He’s been charged with assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest and attempting to disarm a peace officer.

“Thankfully there were no serious injuries as a result of this incident,” Zacharias said in news release, noting the suspect remains in police custody.

“It is fortunate the matter was safely resolved.”
