Coquitlam man charged with punching police at pro-Palestinian rally

Jakub Jerzy Markiewicz, 27, stands accused of punching a VPD officer in the face and gouging her eyes during a rally outside a Chinatown speakeasy where the prime minister was dining.

A Coquitlam man will be back in court Dec. 6 for allegedly assaulting a police officer during a protest outside of a restaurant where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was dining this week.

Jakub Jerzy Markiewicz, 27, is charged with:

  • assaulting a peace officer
  • assault causing bodily harm
  • resisting/obstruction of a peace officer

Sgt. Steve Addison, media relations officer for the Vancouver Police Department, said the suspect is accused of punching an officer in the face and gouging her eyes in Chinatown on Tuesday, Nov. 14; she was taken to hospital.

About 250 pro-Palestinian protesters showed up to Bagheera, a speakeasy at 518 Main St., in Vancouver, while the country’s leader was inside, to call for a ceasefire in the Israel–Hamas war.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Addison said the crowd moved barricades to block part of a lane and linked arms during the spontaneous rally that drew a response from nearly 100 officers.

According to court records, Markiewicz has a history of offences related to protests in Metro Vancouver, including assaulting a pipeline surveyor who was working on Burnaby Mountain for the Trans Mountain pipeline construction project.
