A Coquitlam man in his 20s died Saturday after falling from the fourth floor of an apartment building under construction.

The young man was hanging out with friends at the building on Pitt River Road in Port Coquitlam when, shortly before 11:30 p.m., he leaned against a temporary railing on a fourth-floor balcony. The railing suddenly gave way and the man fell to the ground below.

His friends immediately called 911 but despite attempts by his friends and emergency personnel to resuscitate him he succumbed to his injuries.

Coquitlam RCMP cautioned people to stay off construction sites, which are off limits to those who are not authorized, noting that the consumption of alcohol or drugs can make an already dangerous situation even more so.

Anyone who lives near construction sites and notices suspicious activity, particularly after hours, is asked to contact police immediately.
