Coquitlam man will face trial in March on sexual assault charge

A trial date has been set for a 49-year-old Coquitlam man charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl on a bus in late November.

A trial date has been set for a 49-year-old Coquitlam man charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl on a bus in late November.

The man is known to police as a prolific offender and is on Canada's high-risk sex offender program

According to Transit Police, the Coquitlam student was waiting for a bus at about 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24 at the Lougheed Town Centre bus loop when she was approached by an older man who touched her while making inappropriate comments. When she boarded, the bus the man followed and sat down beside her. He continued to make inappropriate comments and sexually assaulted her before getting off the bus.

Police arrested the suspect at his Coquitlam home three days later.

John Walter Sebela was charged with sexual assault and remains in custody. His trial is scheduled for March 25 at B.C. Provincial Court in Port Coquitlam.
