Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam teens take centre stage at the PNE’s ‘reverse parade’

Tri-City dancers part of the entertainment at unique drive-thru PNE

COVID-19 hasn’t stopped people from celebrating Vancouver’s biggest annual fair this year.

The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is celebrating its 110th anniversary with a drive-thru fair, which continues through Sunday, Aug. 30.

And Tri-City teens are participating.

Colby Mackenzie, a 17-year-old Riverside secondary student, and Denise Chan, 18, from Coquitlam are two of the dancers who are wowing folks in the reverse parade that viewers can watch from the safety of their car.

Mackenzie dances at Encore Dance Academy while Chan is with Tri-City Dance and both are thrilled at the opportunity to participate in the so-called “reverse parade.”

Here’s how it works, after purchasing a ticket, $25 per car load for a specific day and time-slot, drivers make their way through the Hastings Park grounds, where they watch the popular President’s Choice SuperDogs show, see the farm animals and watch a parade.

But instead of people lining the route to see the parade, the dancers strut their stuff to music on giant chairs set up to be mini stages along the road.

According to the PNE, the drive-thru aspect allows everyone to still celebrate the fair while meeting COVID-19 safety protocols.

There will also be food trucks and vendors for drivers to grab a snack from.

The PNE fair is open from Aug. 22 to 30 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets are $25 per carload and payments for food are card only.
