Tri-City residents who wonder into the backcountry recreational areas may be far from the city, but that does not mean they will not be under the watchful eye of police.
The Coquitlam RCMP's rural section said this week that with the summer holiday season getting underway, officers will be stepping up enforcement in areas like Buntzen Lake, Pitt Lake and Indian Arm.
"The Coquitlam RCMP's rural areas have many natural wonders for families, hikers, boaters and outdoor enthusiasts," said Const. Christopher Nordlund of the Rural Policing Section. "We encourage the public to come and enjoy what the area has to offer - but leave the alcohol at home."
Liquor offences alone usually results in about 120 tickets being issued in a typical summer and Nordlund said many of the measure taken by rural police are to make sure people stay safe.
Police will also be checking compliance for small vessel regulations, the fisheries act as well as other criminal code matters.
Safe boating is also a priority and police encourage residents to play it safe when on the water. Boaters are asked to:
always wear lifejackets or personal floatation devices;
make sure the vessel is equipped with the proper safety equipment;
and that anyone operating the pleasure craft has proof of competency on board.
Those who cannot swim, Nordlund said, should stay out of the water and reminded boaters to not drink and drive.
"We'd like to remind the public that water recreation and alcohol don't mix well," Nordlund said. "We are conducting water safety patrols because we want everyone to have a safe and fun summer."
