The Coquitlam RCMP will be putting on a demonstration at Riverside secondary next week to show young people the dangers of distracted driving.
Following a presentation at the school on April 9, students will get the chance to try the distracted driving obstacle course, which is designed to show what can happens when a person drives while using an electronic device.
According to ICBC statistics, a distracted driver is more than 23 times more likely to crash, a number that police and teachers will be highlighting at next week's event.
"The safety of our students is one of our top priorities," said Riverside secondary principal Anthony Ciolfitto. "With more and more students carrying electronic devices to socialize, listen to music or a game, there has never been a greater time to remind and educate our children of the importance of being safe."
Wednesday's event is part of a week-long push by police and teachers to demonstrate the dangers of distracted driving.
A Cell Watch campaign will also take place, with volunteers recording the license plate numbers of people they see talking on the phone while driving. The information is forwarded to police, who will send a warning letter to drivers.
