One man is recovering in hospital after an altercation in the 1000-block of Austin Avenue turned violent Friday night.

Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said investigators are still trying to piece together what happened and are urging witnesses to come forward.

The victim was taken to hospital critical condition but has since been stabilized. Still, police have been unable to interview the male, who is believed to be in his 20s.

"His health condition is going to be the first priority," Chung said. "We are waiting for him to get better."

He said at this point, investigators do not know what motivated the attack and police do not have a description of the suspect.

The altercation occurred around 10:20 p.m. and Chung said it is likely that some noise would have preceded the fight.

"There would have been some physical action on the street there," he said. "I think there are people who have seen what happened and have not spoken to police. We urge them to come forward."
