Coquitlam ready if rain turns to snow

City workers out with brining equipment and salt trucks this morning

Sun on snow-capped mountains frame a cyclist riding the Pitt River dikes in Port Coquitlam. With the weather turning cold, there is a threat of some wet snow at higher levels in Coquitlam.

As winter's chill threatens to turn to rain at least some neighbourhoods in higher elevations in Coquitlam may see some white stuff, says Environment Canada.

However, the temperature is expected to warm in the coming hours, with rainfall expected in most areas.

Still, the City of Coquitlam was up early Tuesday morning salting and brining roads in anticipation of the cold.

"City of Coquitlam Public Works crews have been out since last night applying salt brine to major routes and pre-salting routes at higher elevations in preparation for any ice formation overnight and also any snow accumulation that may occur today. At the current time we have four trucks deployed with another three that are prepared to go out if necessary," stated Brad Lofgren, director of public works in an email today.

"Any snowfall accumulation that we may get today is expected to be minor and over high elevations only (over 200m). The temperature is forecast to rise overnight so any snowfall will turn to rain," he further added.
