Coquitlam will submit its formal bid package next week to host the BC Seniors Games in 2016 - the same year the city is celebrating its 125th anniversary and the Evergreen Line is expected to be running to Town Centre Park.

On Monday, council-in-committee reviewed the application for the Games that typically sees thousands of participants from around the province compete in sports such as cycling, golf, swimming, track and field, archery and darts.

The last time the BC Seniors Games were held in Coquitlam was in 1991 when Coun. Lou Sekora was mayor.

Besides the numerous Coquitlam facilities, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and Maple Ridge are also offering venues, should Coquitlam be named host in September by the BC Seniors Games Society Board.

PoCo's arena dry floor and the Wilson Centre would be used for carpet bowling while softball would be played at McLean Park; Port Moody has made available Rocky Point Park for dragon boating and the rec complex for pickleball while Maple Ridge has its equi-sport centre for equestrian contests.

The annual event, estimated to cost around $500,000, will be held in Kamloops this August.
