Coquitlam's Mountain View Park and Hartley Field are reopening just in time for summer after an extensive upgrade.

The city said in a press release that the enhancements were designed for a range of ages and include new picnic facilities, play elements, a child and youth-oriented playground and outdoor exercise equipment. A washroom building has also been replaced and the old gravel parking lot has been repaved.

Hartley Field also received significant upgrades.

The new sand-based natural grass field will be able to accommodate soccer, baseball and football and should be able to withstand a wider range of weather conditions.

The field enhancements cost $1.1 million, while the other park upgrades cost $1.5 million for a total budget of $2.6 million.

According to a press release, the bulk of the money for the project came from bonus density funds, while the Rotary Club of Coquitlam provided $50,000 toward the playground equipment.

Hartley Field opened in 1970 and is one of the oldest playing surfaces in the city. It was one of a number of fields identified for upgrades in the city's Sports Field Strategy.
