CounterAttack checks kicked off with arrests and vehicle impoundments

Coquitlam RCMP kicked off their summer CounterAttack series and park patrols this past weekend to help keep roads and beaches safe.

Seven motorists were stopped for impaired driving, and all of them had their vehicles impounded and driver's licences suspended for anywhere from three to 90 days.

"At a check stop, one driver told me that he wasn't hurting anyone after he failed to pass the breath test," said Sgt. Dave Fee in a release. "It's hard to believe some people still think drunk driving is okay; it's not. My message to those drivers who still don't get it is that impaired driving is a criminal offence."

Drivers can expect to see more CounterAttack road checks throughout the summer.

Police were also out on the long weekend doing safety patrols at Buntzen Lake on Sunday.

Officers enforcing the Criminal Code, Liquor Control and Licensing Act (LCLA) and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act checked more than 200 people in the park.

One person was arrested for an outstanding warrant, and police said they also issued two LCLA tickets for consuming liquor in a public place and a number of liquor pour-outs.

Three people were ejected from the park for not following the park rules.

A CounterAttack road check at the park entrance resulted in more than three dozen vehicles being checked for liquor compliance and sobriety of drivers.

"For safety reasons, drinking in public places such as a park is not allowed under the LCLA," said Cpl. Jamie Chung. "With the hot weather here to stay, we will increase our patrols at the lake and park areas. The message for park goers is that we take the zero tolerance approach for people who drink alcohol in the park."
