CounterAttack program takes impaired drivers off the road

Coquitlam RCMP's summer CounterAttack program has already taken a number of impaired drivers off the road this summer.

Coquitlam RCMP's summer CounterAttack program has already taken a number of impaired drivers off the road this summer.

Since the beginning of the month, police have issued 15 90-day immediate driving prohibitions, nine three-day prohibitions and 14 24-hour suspensions.

Coquitlam RCMP Const. Michelle Luca said Mounties have also been successful at reducing the number of people who have been injured on the road since the beginning of the year.

"Impaired driving is one type of high-risk behaviour that we deal with on the road," she said. "The goal is reducing injuries and fatalities on the road."

Since the beginning of 2013, the Coquitlam detachment has seen a 15% decrease in injury-involved collisions and a 49% decrease in pedestrian collisions.

The combination of the RCMP's CounterAttack program mixed with other driving enforcement strategies are directly linked to the drop in injuries and fatalities on local roads, Luca said.

Drivers can expect to see more CounterAttack road checks throughout the summer.

Drunk driving stats were not available from Port Moody Police Department before The Tri-City News' print deadline.

Meanwhile, Port Moody has issued nine 90 day immediate roadside prohibitions to drivers impaired by alcohol since the beginning of July. Another five people received 24-hour suspensions that were given to drivers under the influence of drugs.

"We continue to conduct active patrols and roadblocks to ensure that motorists are safe from impaired drivers," said Port Moody Police Department Sgt. Brad Sheridan.
