Lock your doors and secure your windows.

Tips you've likely heard at least once a week from loved ones or even police, and such is the case for a pair of Coquitlam areas that have been a recent spike in property theft.

RCMP's latest CompStat report shows the Town Centre and Harbour Village/Ranch Park neighbourhoods have seen more criminal activity involving theft.

This includes break-and-enters at homes and businesses, theft from vehicles and thefts of vehicles.

Mounties are set to keep extra eyes on in these areas, canvassing for such activity as part of its new initiative between now and Nov. 2.

Residents can expect RCMP roaming near the following:

  • From Johnson Street in the west to Inlet Street in the east
  • From Guildford Way in the north to Lougheed Highway in the south

  • From Mariner Way in the west to Lougheed Highway in the east
  • From Dewdney Trunk Road in the north to Chilko Drive in the south

In the meantime, Coquitlam Mounties are urging the public to take all steps necessary when it comes to protecting personal property to curb potential theft.

This includes:

  • Locking doors and closing windows
  • Parking in well-lit/well-populated areas where "natural surveillance" can serve as a deterrent
  • Closing garage doors at night
  • Taking your garage opener, house and/or business keys and vehicle registration papers out of your vehicle when it’s parked (if thieves steal these items, they could use them to commit other crimes including identity theft and break-and-enter)

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity is encouraged to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 or call 911 if there’s a theft in progress.
