Cuba ordeal ends for police officers

Police officers acquitted in case of alleged sexual assault, consular services being provided

Varadero — a popular tourist spot in Cuba — is where two Vancouver-area police officers were held pending a court case, which was resolved this week. The two men were acquitted, say media reports.

An eight-month nightmare faced by two police officers detained in Cuba could soon be over after they were acquitted in a case involving an alleged sexual assault.

It’s not known when Const. Mark Simms, a Vancouver police officer, and Const. Jordan Long, of the Port Moody Police Department will return home but consular officials say, without naming names, that the Canadian citizens found not guilty in Cuba are being provided consular services.

However, no further information is being provided because of provisions under the Privacy Act, according to spokesman Richard Walker.

Port Moody police are also not releasing any information, stating that have not received any.

Media reports say the two were barred from leaving Cuba after their arrest last spring while on vacation in Varadero.

A family member of one of the officers told CBC News the men were acquitted Thursday in court.
