School librarians have launched a campaign to raise awareness of concerns they have about cuts to teacher-librarian staff in B.C. public schools, including School District 43.
"Libraries and literacy are at the heart of public education," BC Teacher-Librarians' Association vice-president Jeff Yasinchuk said in a press release, "and they are under attack once again.
"In the Coquitlam school district, over 30,000 students will be impacted. Many may no longer have access to the same learning opportunities as students in other districts."
SD43, which was expected to approve its 2014/'15 budget Tuesday (after The Tri-City News' print deadline), is changing the way librarian staffing is organizing, cutting 38.38 full-time equivalent positions and forcing schools to reduce staffing for other programs, such as music and explorations, to keep libraries open.
