Property taxes are due July 4, 2023.

Homeowners across the Tri-Cities have only a few days left to pay their property taxes — or risk incurring a fine.

Tuesday (July 4) is the deadline for residents of the region to complete the annual payment for 2023, which will cover the period of Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.

The tax revenues help contribute to essential services as they cover nearly half of a city's or village's total budget for the year.

This includes upgrades to parks and trails, road maintenance, recreation and cultural programs, community events, policing and firefighting response.

However, after July 4, property owners are set to face a penalty on top of the total.

That's five per cent extra in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody, and 10 per cent in Belcarra, according to each municipality's respective websites.

In most cases, another five per cent penalty will be added to invoices on top of the first late fee if not paid before Sept. 15.

How can I pay?

In each community, residents are being offered a number of opportunities to pay property taxes:

  • Online
  • By phone
  • By mail
  • In person at....
    • City hall
    • Village office
    • 24-hour finance dropbox
    • Banking institution

As well, a Home Owner Grant is available for homeowners that need an extra boost as it helps reduce their property tax.

Eligible candidates are asked to apply through the B.C. government, but it must be done before the July 4 deadline in order to avoid a penalty.

What? No invoice?

Property tax notices were mailed out to Tri-Cities homeowners over the final week of May.

However, those that didn't get a statement in the mail is strongly encouraged to contact their municipality as soon as possible.
