Dentist reaches in to help out kids

When Coquitlam dentist Derek Kim practiced in Comox and Chilliwack, his office offered a unique service to the public.

They asked for people to write in requesting a free dental makeover and the person who they judged was the most in need got the work done over a course of a year.

"It was really amazing how much it changed their lives," Kim recalled.

Recently, Kim has been wanting to do some more outreach, especially overseas; however, his personal time has been limited these days with his toddler twins.

As a result, he and his staff at Austin Heights Dental will be staying close to home when they host their first free community dental day for kids age under 14.

The session, which runs on Tuesday, Aug. 20, involves an exam by Kim or fellow dentist Mehran Mousavi (who is volunteering his time) as well as two x-rays - at no charge.

Appointments will be scheduled for about 30 minutes each for young children and 25 minutes each for teens.

For the preschoolers and elementary school kids, the session will be more of a meet-and-greet to familiarize them with the environment and to try out the dentist chair, Kim said.

Overall, education will be key, reminding them to brush and floss daily and return to the dentist twice a year.

The program is "a great exposure for the kids," Kim said, adding, "A lot of times, they don't get to visit with the dentist at all because their parents can't afford it or they don't have benefits through work. We want to make it as easy as possible for them and their children."

Kim said many children will be in his family dentistry office that day so "they'll be around their peers. It's also really good if they bring a sibling along so they can make it fun."

He added, "This is our way of giving back to the community... and, if this is a success, I'm sure we'll repeat it soon in the future."
