Kathy Nguyen, left, and Maria Adato, quit their corporate jobs to start their own gluten-free doughnut bakery, Holy Mochi, which will now be available at Sweet Talk Donuts in Port Moody.

What could be better than a fresh, local artisanal doughnut?

How about fresh doughnuts from two local artisans?

Port Moody’s new gourmet doughnut destination, Sweet Talk, has teamed with Holy Mochi Donuts so doughnut lovers with gluten allergies won’t be left out of the delicious fun.

Holy Mochi’s Kathy Nguyen and Maria Adato said the collaboration came about when the Sweet Talk team noticed a demand for gluten-free confections at their storefront location on Moody Street that just opened in January. But already busy keeping up with the demand for their own doughnuts, Holy Mochi offered to step in.

The Port Coquitlam bakers are now making their gluten-free squishy circles available at Sweet Talk every weekend, from Friday to Sunday.

“Since our doughnuts are renowned for their gluten-free recipe without compromising on taste and texture, we were perfectly poised to fill this void,” said Nguyen, a former digital marketer who started Holy Mochi with her friend, Adato, in 2022.

Baking in small batches out of a commissary kitchen in Port Coquitlam before moving to the same facility in Port Moody where Sweet Talk prepares its treats, Nguyen and Adato peddle their doughnuts at specialty cafés across Metro Vancouver as well as take pre-orders and walk-ins on weekends.

The women channel their Philippine and Vietnamese food traditions to create flavours that are distinct, but not too sweet, decorated icings that taste like coco panda, blood orange, jasmine rose milk tea and chocolate caramel popcorn then boosted with extra touches like salted caramel, dried orange and coconut.

For the second straight year, Nguyen and Adato are also creating special Holy Mochi Donut Valentine’s bouquets with flavours like ube, yuzu strawberry, red velvet and, of course, chocolate.

A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of each bouquet goes to A Loving Spoonful that provides freshly-made meals to people living with HIV.

As well, Holy Mochi is rolling out special donuts to celebrate Lunar New Year with unique flavours like durian, red bean, black sesame and mandarin.

Sweet Talk is operated by restaurateurs Scott McTavish and Juan Perello who wanted to embark a fun, new adventure to complement their Taps & Tacos establishment right next door.

They opened the doors of their first bricks and mortar location at 87 Moody St. after months of product development and pop-up sales that often sold out in minutes.
