Publicly shaming people who dump their household garbage in city parks may be the only way to get the message out that it's a dumb and dangerous thing to do.
At least that may be have been the motive behind the posting Monday on Reddit of a couple apparently dumping their garbage in city bins at Mundy Park in Coquitlam.
City spokesperson Kathleen Vincent said the garbage has been cleaned up and the city is relying on residents to keep an eye on people dumping big bags of trash in city bins. In this case, the identity of the couple is unknown so there is no way to follow up.
She said the dumpers are typically repeat offenders and the trash is opened to see if there is anything that reveals their identity so the city can follow up with a $250 fine.
"It's not acceptable because it puts our residents at risk," Vincent said.
