A group representing the Canadian Labour Congress at the local level has unveiled the list of Tri-City candidates it will support in next month's municipal and school board elections.
But the list is absent an endorsement for Coquitlam's top job.
On Monday, the New Westminster and District Labour Council (NWDLC) said it will back incumbent Greg Moore for mayor in Port Coquitlam and challenger Gaetan Royer in Port Moody. It did not, however, endorse incumbent Richard Stewart or challengers Coun. Lou Sekora and Mark Mahovlich in Coquitlam.
The five members of the Protect Coquitlam slate - councillors Neal Nicholson, Chris Wilson and Bonita Zarrillo as well as new candidates Jack Trumley and Shobha Nair - also got an NWDLC nod while Carol Cahoon is the only Coquitlam school board candidate on the list. Coun. Nicholson was previously backed by NWDLC in the 2011 general election while Wilson and Zarrillo both received union support for their byelection wins last year.
In Port Coquitlam, incumbent councillors Darrell Penner, Glenn Pollock and Brad West are getting the group's support again along with first-time candidates Laura Dupont and Nancy McCurrach. NWDLC picked Chris King, a Coquitlam resident, as the only PoCo school trustee contender it's endorsing.
And in Port Moody, councillors Rick Glumac and Zoe Royer secured the third-party endorsement along with union representative and previous candidate Barbara Junker, and business owner Anne Ladouceur. Glumac and Junker were backed by the group in the 2011 election. NWDLC did not select a PoMo trustee candidate
NWDLC has 123 affiliated unions representing more than 65,000 members in the Tri-Cities as well as Burnaby, New Westminster, Belcarra, Anmore, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Delta, Surrey, White Rock and the Langleys.
