As many as 11 bear sightings have been recorded in Port Coquitlam in recent weeks, prompting the city to remind homeowners to keep their garbage locked up or in containers with bear-resistant locks and wait until between 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. to set it out on the curb on garbage day.

"A fed bear is a dead bear," the city notes in a press release.

Garbage regulations introduced in 2009 require residents to take more care of their garbage and the press release suggests the new rules have contributed to a reduction in bear killings. In 2008, seven problem bears were killed, compared to one in each of 2009 and 2010
