Fire shuts down Coquitlam restaurant

Nagano Sushi in Coquitlam is expected to be closed for a couple weeks after an early morning fire did extensive damage to the kitchen of the Glen Drive restaurant.

Nagano Sushi in Coquitlam is expected to be closed for a couple weeks after an early morning fire did extensive damage to the kitchen of the Glen Drive restaurant.

Coquitlam Fire Chief Wade Pierlot said police informed firefighters of smoke coming from the building. He told The Tri-City News on Tuesday that his crews were able to quickly contain the blaze and keep it from spreading to neighbouring shops.

"These types of buildings have common attic spaces and [fire] can get away from you pretty fast," he said. "Things can happen but we were able to get in there and ventilate it."

The call came in at around 2:30 a.m. and there was some smoke damage to the adjacent noodle house. The rest of the retail units in the building were undamaged, Pierlot said.

Aside from the fire, there was extensive smoke damage throughout Nagano and he said it could be a couple of weeks before the restaurant is able to re-open.

Investigators were still combing through the debris Tuesday morning but Pierlot said that the blaze did not appear to be suspicious.
