The man accused of murdering his wife in a Port Moody house fire last week made his first appearance Monday at B.C. Provincial Court in Port Coquitlam.

He cannot be named due to a publication ban in effect to protect the identities of the couple's six children, five of whom were at home at the time of the incident.

One of the children called 911 to report a domestic dispute on the afternoon of July 10; by the time police arrived, the home was engulfed in flames and neighbours and passers-by were helping the children clamber out a second-floor window.

The two adults were still inside and Port Moody Police officers ran in to rescue them. The woman died that evening as a result of her injuries.

The man was arrested at the scene and was later charged with murder and two counts of arson. He is due back in court on Aug. 2.
