Someone dumped a bucket of fish remains near a Port Coquitlam trail popular with walkers, cyclists, and bears, causing a potentially dangerous situation for people and the bruins.
The mess was cleaned up by city operations crews today, Monday, but for several hours it lay next to some blackberry bushes in a road easement at the end of Patricia Avenue.
Roy Reinmuth spotted the slimy red pile of about 10 fish tails and fish guts early Monday morning while out for a walk and is worried the mess could attract bears and potentially cause a dangerous situation.
"Imagine there's a sow and two cubs and somebody walks or rides by and startles them, it's really a dangerous situation," Reinmuth said.
Ironically, the mess was dumped just a few feet from a no-dumping sign that warns of a $2,000 fine if someone is caught dumping in the area.
In a statement, the city said it would follow up to see if the person who left the fish offal can be tracked down. The area will also be monitored in case it happens again.
