Police watchdog seeks witnesses to incident June 8 that started with an attempted traffic stop by Port Moody police

The Independent Investigations Office is looking into an accident that took place in Maple Ridge. It started with a traffic stop by a member of the Port Moody police.

B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is investigating an accident that took place in Maple Ridge last Saturday that left one woman with serious injuries.

It began at approximately 5:15 p.m June 8 when a Port Moody Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle that appeared not to have a visible rear licence plate.

But instead of stopping, the driver sped off into oncoming traffic in the area of the the 20300 of 113b Avenue and collided head-on with another vehicle. 

The driver then tried to escape but was caught a short distance away.

A man and woman were taken to hospital, the woman with serious injuries.

IIO is an independent civilian oversight agency that investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
