The Burrard Inlet Marine Enchancement Society is a step closer to rebuilding its hatchery at Mossom Creek after raising funds at a special event in Port Moody on Sunday.
The event was held to raise funds for construction costs for the hatchery, which burned down in December. Local dignitaries, including mayors and councillors, were on hand and dined on barbecued salmon and bid on dozens of live and silent auction items, including a trip for two to Langara Lodge.
On Thursday, a ceremonial groundbreaking will be held for invited guests to acknowledge funders and supporters of the project.
According to project manager Pat Dennett, plans are in the works to begin pre-construction work this summer. However, BIMES still needs $150,000 before it can start construction on a basic two-storey concrete building for doing hatchery work and another $250,000 to fully outfit the building.
