The gravel field at Port Coquitlam's Gates Park could be upgraded to artificial turf later this year.

On Monday, council is expected to approve its 2012 budget, which includes more than $1.6 million for the Gates Park project, with an additional $100,000 coming from the PoCo Minor Soccer Association.

Larry Wheeler, the city's deputy director of parks and recreation, said in an email that the Athletic Field Strategy conducted last year identifies the need for additional soccer facilities. He said a turf field is a "high-quality, low-maintenance option that can provide up to seven times the playable hours as compared to a traditional grass field."

Council is expected to vote on the final reading of the 2012-2016 financial plan at its meeting Monday. If the budget is approved, the field work is expected to be completed in the next year.
