Supporting women in university across Canada is the goal for the Coquitlam chapter of this non-profit group.

"Get Out," a new featured column by the Tri-City News, is an opportunity for community, sports and arts groups to get the word out about their programs and activities.

Introducing.... Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Coquitlam.

We are a non-profit organization, one of 94 local chapters across Canada belonging to CFUW-FCFDW.

There are more than 6,500 members in Canada with a mission to achieve educational and economic equality and social justice through continuous learning and empowerment.

We offer camaraderie and companionship to women through our interest groups which include bridge, gardening and books. There are lunch, movie, dinner groups and a committee devoted to education.

Our monthly meetings, from September to May, feature a guest speaker on varied topics aimed to educate, entertain, and satisfy intellectual curiosity.

We meet by both Zoom and in person. Our in-person meetings at Coquitlam libraries are open to the public.

We are proud to have helped establish the first library branch in Coquitlam in 1969, and to award annual bursaries to graduating School District 43 (SD43) high school students.

As well, we have established endowment funds at both Simon Fraser University and Douglas Colleges. Community service groups such as Big Sisters have also received donations through us.

We invite you to learn more about CFUW-Coquitlam when we are Coquitlam Farmer’s Market (1655 Winslow Ave.) on Sunday, Aug. 25.

Further information about us and how to become a member is available on our website.
