Get Out: PoCo Run Club

Why should you run? Exercise, expand your social circle, more time with family or improve your marathon racing time.

PoCo Run Club, made up of roughly 120 members, is set to begin its summer season on June 29, 2024.

"Get Out," a new featured column by the Tri-City News, is an opportunity for community, sports and arts groups to get the word out about their programs and activities.

Introducing.... PoCo Run Club.

PoCo Run Club is both a recreational and competitive running club with 120 members.

Our recreational walk/run programs are for people who have never run before or are returning after a hiatus. These programs aim to get people into running by starting with a lot of walking and some running where each week the running increases or the walking decreases.

Our competitive running programs are geared towards those who want to push themselves to run longer distances — 10 km, half marathon, and marathon — and/or get faster.

We do welcome kids under 16 years old as long as they are registered with an adult to supervise them.

Our main leader-led clinic runs on Saturdays at 8 a.m. and we meet around Hyde Creek Rec Centre. We also have two other casual meeting days on Tuesday and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m., which are participant-led.

Here are some reasons why our runners have joined:

  • Some want to become a runner for the exercise
  • Some want to run with a group for social and safety reasons
  • Some want a form of exercise that they can do with their spouse or their child
  • Some want to train for a longer distance
  • Some want to improve their racing time at a certain distance
  • Some just want to come out on Thirsty Thursday for a fun and social run

Our summer season begins Saturday, June 29, at 8 a.m. and registration ends July 13.

We are a member club with the PoCo Sports Alliance and we are involved in the community.

Our club volunteers with the Hometown Terry Fox Run as well as the Spirit Triathlon. We also host a fundraiser in December to support several Port Coquitlam families throughout the winter holidays.

For more information on the PoCo Run Club, you can visit the group's website, Facebook and Instagram pages or send an email to [email protected].

The club has two fee structures:

  • seasonal — $100/season (winter, spring, summer or fall)
  • multi-season specials (our current special is $150 for the summer and fall seasons) — when one family member registers for a multi-season membership ($150), another from the same household can register for half price ($75)
