With temperatures hitting the freezing mark this week, the city of Port Coquitlam is warning residents to be prepared for snow before the bad weather arrives.
Vehicles and homes should be winterized and people should make sure they are stocked up on food and prescription in case they are caught off guard by bad weather, said Gord Voncina, the city's manager of operations, in a press release.
The city is also reminding residents that homeowners businesses are responsible for shoveling snow and clearing walks in front of their property.
In the event that the region is hit by snowfall, the city said it will temporarily cancel waste collectoin if roads are hazardous. If this occurs, bulletins will be posted at www.portcoquitlam.ca/snow and aired on CKNW.
Crews will begin collecting waste in missed zones after completing their regularly scheduled zone the next day. It may take several days to complete collection for neighbourhoods that have been missed.
The city's snow and ice removal crews are also ready to mobilize if they are needed.
PoCo has am in-pavement road sensore system that alerts city staff to road conditions. Brine trucks are dispatched to de-ice the street with a water-salt solution.
Arterial roads and main routes are the priority for snow removal, along with steep hills and school zones. That is followed by non-arterial bus routes and collector roads. Residential streets leading to subdivisions and industrial side streets are the lowest priority roads.
