A week after glass collection resumed for Coquitlam and Anmore residents, the rest of the Tri-Cities has somewhere to drop off their empty bottles and jars.
Effective today (Monday, Dec. 20), Recycle BC will now resume collection of glass bottles and jars at its depots.
As well, areas of B.C. that get home glass pick up, including multi-family homes, will see that service resume.
Recycle BC spokesperson Dave Lefebvre told the Tri-City News the re-opening of the glass plant in Abbotsford has enabled the staged resumption of glass collection.
"That operation is up and running again and we're able to accept glass again," said Lefebvre, who noted that the plant was shut down twice: once because it was flooded and a second time because of an evacuation alert.
However, people are still asked to hold on to their polystyrene containers and foam packaging.
Foam collection at depots remains temporarily suspended because of a lack of trucks, as well as shipping concerns.
Lefebvre said the foam materials are typically shipped to China to a manufacturer that makes frames out of the material.
He asked that people continue to hold on to these materials until collection resumes.
Lefebvre said he expects to be able to provide more information in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the Coquitlam transfer station on United Boulevard has been handling a large increase in waste during the B.C. flood recovery.
To help with waste handling, Metro Vancouver has been accepting waste from outside of the region, including food waste.
