Cailyn Sun and Alayna Merchant scooped accolades at the Concours d’art oratoire in Surrey on May 4, 2024.

Two students in School District 43 are celebrating after clinching awards at a French-speaking competition last week.

Cailyn Sun and Alayna Merchant scooped accolades at the Concours d’art oratoire, a contest that saw more than 175 participants at the Surrey campus of Simon Fraser University (SFU) on Saturday, May 4.

Both Sun and Merchant were first round winners.

Sun, who was in the Grade 11/12 Immersion category, took third place for her speech “Les hazards de la procrastination” while Merchant earned first in the Grade 6 Immersion division for her talk “L’égalité centre les hommes and les femmes.”

Run provincially by the Canadian Parents for French BC & Yukon, Concours d'art oratoire is held nationwide with contestants developing and presenting speeches en français.

In B.C., it is open to all students in grades 6 through 12 who are learning French in French Immersion, in core French programs and through the Conseil scolaire francophone de la C.-B. (SD93).

The next Concours is on May 3, 2025.
