A back-to-basics Golden Spike Days enabled the society that runs the annual summer fair at Rocky Point Park to repay its $14,000 debt to the city of Port Moody.

Golden Spike Days Society president Sally Comin presented a cheque for the full amount of the loan to city council Tuesday, noting that new partnerships, cost cutting and a renewed family-friendly focus helped the society get back in the black.

Early in May, there were concerns the society couldn't pay back even part of the loan but council decided against forgiving the debt. On Tuesday, Mayor Joe Trasolini said the repayment proved the society was was able to meet its obligations.
