A young Burnaby man has pleaded guilty to three charges in connection with a horrific crash that killed a 16-year-old in Belcarra more than four years ago.

On the evening of Sept. 2, 2010 Christopher Baires was driving with Melissa Tomac and two other friends after a day at White Pine Beach in Belcarra Regional Park. Baires tried to overtake another car on a blind corner of Bedwell Bay Road when he lost control, crashing into a tree.

All four occupants were taken to Royal Columbian Hospital, where Tomac, a Burnaby teen, died four hours later of her injuries.

On Friday at BC Supreme Court in New Westminster, Baires pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. He was originally charged with nine offences, including impaired and dangerous driving.

Baires' next court appearance will be March 31, 2015 for a sentencing hearing.
