Heavy rainfall Tuesday, Jan. 5, could cause localized flooding warns Environment Canada.

Environment Canada is warning another round of heavy rain will continue to pummel Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and the North Shore Tuesday, dropping up to 60 millimetres of precipitation.

“An intense front will approach Vancouver Island early this morning and cross the Lower Mainland tonight,” wrote the agency in its rainfall warning.

“This will bring rain and wind for most of the day with the heaviest rain expected in the afternoon and evening.”

Environment Canada said residents should be prepared for localized flooding.

The heavy rain is forecast to ease off by Wednesday morning.

Closer to the water, high winds has prompted the cancellation of several BC Ferries sailings across its busiest routes.

Among the BC Ferries sailings affected so far today:

  • Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay between 10:40 a.m. and 6:35 p.m.
  • Tsawwassen-Duke Point, the 12:45 p.m. departing Tsawwassen is still scheduled to run, but other sailings between 10:15 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. are cancelled
  • Tsawwassen-Gulf Islands, morning and early afternoon sailings are scheduled to run, but numerous sailings between 3:35 p.m. and 9:25 p.m. are cancelled

Wind warnings are posted for Haida Gwaii, north and central coasts, most of Vancouver Island and the southern Gulf Islands, the Sunshine Coast and Metro Vancouver.

Winds of 70 to 90 km/h are forecast to hit the south coast by midday, says Environment Canada.
