City halls in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody will glow teal tonight (Sept. 18)
But they aren’t being transported back to the early 1990s.
The special lighting is to bring attention to efforts by Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver (BBGV) to attract more men to become volunteer mentors to youth. Other notable landmarks to be lit up include:
- Science World
- BC Place
- Pacific Coliseum
- Vancouver City Hall
- Burrard Street Bridge
- Surrey Civic Plaza
- city halls in Burnaby, New Westminster and North Vancouver
In a news release, the organization said it hopes 30 new volunteers across Metro Vancouver will sign on to become Big Brothers by the end of September. BBGV has paused its recruitment efforts in some communities since April, 2022, because of a lack of volunteers.
“Mentoring relationships help ignite the potential of children and youth,” said Rose Higgins, BBGV’s director of programs and operations, adding they also contribute to the creation of positive and vibrant communities.
According to BBGV, there are more than 100 children across Metro Vancouver waiting to be paired with a Big Brother, 16 of them in the Tri-Cities. Aside from its community mentoring program, the organization also offers in-school, sports and active play, math, teen and even Indigenous mentoring opportunities.
