Holiday Food Drive has record-breaking year

Coquitlam Superstore raised $6,000 as part of a $2 million haul nationally

More than $6,000 was raised for Share Family and Community Services during last month's Holiday Food Drive.

Between Dec. 1 and 24, Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills and Your Independent Grocer in Coquitlam collected money and non-perishable food items for those in need. The campaign was the most successful to date, according to Loblaws, raising thousands of pounds of food and $2 million across Canada.

"Year after year our customers and colleagues donate food items or add a few dollars to their grocery bill to ensure that people in their own communities have enough to eat," said Rob Holt, the manager of the Real Canadian Superstore on Lougheed Highway. "We want to thank British Columbians for their generosity during the record-breaking 2018 Holiday Food Drive — they have really gone above and beyond this year."

In B.C., more than $230,000 was raised for 47 food banks across the province, higher than last year's total by $55,000.

Laura Lansink, the executive director of Food Banks BC, said donations in the days and weeks leading up to Christmas can reverberate through the coming months.

"British Columbia food banks feed close to 100,000 people each month — almost 35,000 of them are children," she said. "The Loblaw Holiday Food Drive helps to keep the shelves of food banks across the province stocked with healthy choices all winter long, making a huge impact on our neighbours who rely on the support of a local food bank."
