Construction on Coquitlam's first homeless shelter is expected to start this spring.
On Monday, city council granted a development permit to RainCity Housing for the four-storey facility at 3030 Gordon Ave., off Westwood Street.
Andrew Hiscox of CitySpace Consulting, which is representing the operators, told The Tri-City News a building permit will be sought from the city next month. If all goes smoothly, clients will be accommodated by August 2015 - about a year behind the original schedule.
RainCity will be operating the 30 emergency shelter beds and 30 transitional housing units at the permanent shelter.
As part of the development permit bid, RainCity will also be required to sign a "good neighbour agreement" with the municipality to look after the building, monitor clients' conduct, meet regularly with city officials and police, and have a 24-hour hotline.
