An Anmore home has been completely destroyed after a fire broke out early Monday morning.
The incident led to the shutdown of Anmore elementary as fire crews worked to contain the Elementary Road blaze ahead of the morning school drop-off.
"There is one street into the school and we have it blocked with fire hoses and trucks," said Sasamat Fire Chief Jay Sharpe, who added that the school may re-open in the afternoon. School District 43 said on Twitter that parents should monitor the district website for updates.
The 911 call came in at 4:39 a.m. after a nearby resident noticed flames inside his neighbour's house. Nobody was home at the time as the property is owned by a retired couple who are currently on holidays, Sharpe said.
Crews initially worked to contain the flames from outside the home but he added that the fire had done significant damage to the property.
"It is a total loss," he said. "The fire was so intense. It went horizontal through the attic space."
Due to a local community fire near the school, Anmore Elementary will be closed this morning. This is at the direction of the Sasamat Fire Department. Please check the school website frequently for updates as to when students can return to school.
