A fire in the 3000-block of Spuraway Avenue in Coquitlam was quickly knocked down by firefighters. But not before the home was gutted and residents in the neighbourhood were displaced from their homes for about an hour.

Many of those evacuated gathered on garden chairs at the corner of Spuraway and Daybreak where they chatted in the warm sunshine with Coquitlam RCMP and Victims Services officers. A Coast Mountain bus brought in to shelter the evacuees remained empty.

The fire started at about 10:50 a.m. and a plume of heavy, black smoke quickly rose over the neighbourhood. Several trucks from Coquitlam Fire and Rescue, as well as one from Port Coquitlam attended. Nobody was hurt in the fire.

Most of the evacuated neighbours were allowed to return to their homes about an hour after the blaze started, but Spuraway, between Daybreak and Ranch Park Drive, was expected to remain closed for several hours.

Cpl. Mike McLaughlin of Coquitlam RCMP said police would work with fire investigators to determine a cause for the fire.
