Don't be fooled by the sunshine you might catch today: Rain is coming to Metro Vancouver.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the region, cautioning that we are likely to get quite a bit of rain starting Wednesday night.

A low pressure system approaching Vancouver Island on Wednesday will give widespread rain to the south coast beginning Wednesday night and continuing into Thursday evening, explains the weather agency.

That system is likely to bring significant rainfall, reaching up to 50 mm over the Howe Sound region and parts of Metro Vancouver, especially over the North Shore mountains.

The special weather statement is in effect for the following areas:

  • Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
  • Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta

Tuesday's weather forecast kicks off with patchy fog and mainly cloudy conditions, with a 40 per cent of showers today and a high of 17C.

Overnight, the low will go down to 11C, and the mainly cloudy conditions will continue into Wednesday ahead of the rains due that night.

Once we emerge from the deluge on Thursday we are looking to see showers on Friday, but a mix of sun and cloud, dry conditions, and rising temps starting Saturday and carrying on to Monday when we could see temps of 23C in the region.
