Ikea, Canadian Tire among businesses honoured

Local businesses, individuals and groups working with children will be honoured May 17 during the The Tri-Cities Champions for Young Children Awards of Excellence.

Local businesses, individuals and groups working with children will be honoured May 17 during the The Tri-Cities Champions for Young Children Awards of Excellence.

Last week the Tri-Cities ECD Committee announced the finalists in its third annual awards ceremony to recognize local leaders who make the community a better place for families and chldren.

The awards will be given in several categories, including Individual Champions, Group /Organization Champions, Business Champions, Leadership Champions and Individual Champions Working with Children Who Have Special Needs.

Finalists for this year are: Jumpstart (Canadian Tire), Ikea, Kerrigan's Gymnastics, Childgarden Preschool, Friendly Forest Preschool, SUCCESS. Multicultural ECD Program, Denise Anderson, Rhian Piprell, Debra Smith, Mary-Ann Nelson, Stacey Pellichero, Viki Crowe, Deborah Duncan, Vicki Lepper and Ada Sin. Also nominated this year in the Group/Organization category was the SHARE Family and Community Services Early Intervention Therapies Program and the Simon Fraser Society for Community Living Supported Child Development Program.

The Tri-Cities Champions for Young Children Awards of Excellence banquet will be held May the 17th at the Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club. This year's event will also feature the re-affirmation of the Tri-Cities Early Childhood Development Accord by 12 Community Partners. Entertainment will be provided by the Coastal Sound Music Academy Novisingers and Junior Girlchoir and the keynote address will be given by Joanne Schroeder, deputy director of the Human Early Learning Partnership at UBC.
