IKEA switching over light products to LED

Swedish-based retailer IKEA is doing its part to get Canadians to switch to lower-energy LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs.

The company with a store in Coquitlam will be switching over its entire lighting range to LED by 2016, to encourage consumers to switch from old incandescent bulbs to LED without changing the lamp base.

According to the global retailer, if one million people changed one bulb each to LED, the amount of CO2 emissions that would be reduced would be the equivalent of taking 6,700 cars off the road or planting 17 million trees per year.

By encouraging people to make the switch, IKEA is hoping to change public attitudes because according to a survey by consultants hired by the company, nearly half (49%) of Canadians know LED have a longer life span than other bulbs, but only 27% say they use them.
